Discussion:
Translations problems

Hy,

I've recently started translating referencer to german (via
launchpad.net), because I'm using it and it's really usefull for me.

I'm not a professional translator, so anyone who wants to check and/or
correct my translations is of course very much welcome to do so ;-)

But I've hit a minor problem. Some strings can't really be translated
properly, due to the way they are used in the source code. The problem
is that the word order is different in english and german. A good
example is the String "Contacting crossref.org to retrieve metadata
for". It is used by appending the DOI that should be retrieved.

If I were to translate this sentence to german, it would look something
like this:

"Kontaktiere crossref.org, um Metadaten f?r ?%1? abzurufen". So there is
still something after the DOI. The way it's implemented right now
doesn't allow for such a translation.

I think the (current) Code:

Glib::ustring messagetext =
String::ucompose (
_("<b><big>%1</big></b>\n\n%2 '%3'\n"),
_("Downloading metadata"),
_("Contacting crossref.org to retrieve metadata for"),
doi_);

should be replaced with something like this:

Glib::ustring messagetext =
String::ucompose (
_("<b><big>%1</big></b>\n\n%2\n"),
_("Downloading metadata"),
String::ucompose (
_("Contacting crossref.org to retrieve metadata for '%1'"),
doi_)
);

But then again I haven't written any C++ in ages, so take it with a
grain of salt.

I assume that other languages have a similar problem, so solving this
wouldn't be good for german only.

And I'm not a programmer at all, but as far as I can guess on source
code you suggestion is the Right Thing (TM).

Yes, that's my mistake. I've corrected that and a couple of others in
the way you suggest. No doubt there are other problems hidden
elsewhere.

I've uploaded an updated translation template to launchpad, although
past experience indicates that it may take a few hours to become
available.

Apologies to the other translators for changing some already-translated
strings. Please do continue to let me know about anything in the code
that's causing you problems.

Regards,
John

Thanks for producing that fine piece of software.

Thanks, I've seen the fix. I hate to nag, but I think there's a small
typo there (which will cause another string change, unfortunately):

"<big><b>%1: %2</b></big>\n\n%2"

should probably be

"<big><b>%1: %2</b></big>\n\n%3"

instead.

Another (unrelated) question: Is there any bug tracking system for
referencer?

Because I've think I've found a minor bug with editing extra fields. The
edit seems to get lost if you don't click on any other extra-field after
editing.

So if you enter some value and click on another edit field, then the
first edit will be ok. But if you enter some value (don't press Enter or
anything) and click the year-field (or the Save button) then the edit
gets lost. (I've just verified this using SVN from right now).

Well spotted, fixed in svn and new template uploaded to launchpad.

I've just enabled the launchpad bug tracker for referencer. It may have
advantages or disadvantages compared to bugzilla or trac, but it wins by
taking me precisely three mouse clicks to set up.

Yes, I can reproduce this. Will look into it. Filed here:
