(CCing you Eric, since you're the referencer autotools guru)
Well, I've persuaded autotools to install the translation file correctly
(update from SVN, it needed a file called LINGUAS) and added it.po to
the repository. The .mo file is getting installed
to /usr/local/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/referencer.mo, which seems to
be where all my other gnome apps are putting it too.
However, when I install and run, it's not working. The Gtk stock items
get translated correctly, so I know my locale is set correctly
(it_IT.UTF-8). Maybe someone on the list knows something about
intltool?
John
I can't even get the stock items to show up in Italian (do you just set
LANG=it_IT.UTF-8?). But it seems like the following patch should work.
Please give it a try.

Thanks Eric, that works for me. I've committed it to SVN.

To get things coming up in italian, I set LANG and LANGUAGE both to
it_IT.UTF-8, having already installed support for that locale
system-wide. On Ubuntu it's as simple as
System->Administration->Language support, no idea how it's done on other
distros.

So, once we have Kai's patch for using String::ucompose (hint, hint),
we'll be all set for full translations.

Here's an additional one-liner that adds a Translation tab to the about
box. The translator just translates "translator-credits" in the .po
file to his/her name. If you are running in English, or if the
translator did not provide his name, there is no Translation tab.
